One woman was killed and five other people were injured after a knife attack in central London’s Russell Square. It is not known at this stage what condition they are in or the nature of their injuries.
The woman’s body was lying on the pavement and the area is surrounded by a heavy armed police presence. The woman is believed to be in her 60s.
A 19 year old suspect was arrested by the police,using a Taser on Wednesday night. The incident began shortly after 10.30 pm local time.
The suspect remains under police guard in hospital, while counter-terrorism police have been drafted in as officers confirm terrorism is being explored as a possible motive.
Police said mental health seemed to be a “significant” factor in the incident.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for the public to remain “calm and vigilant”.
The Scotland Yard has deployed extra officers, including armed police from Thursday morning for safety of the Londoners.
Media footage shows a large presence of emergency service on the scene last night. Officer cordoned off the area and were also stopping people entering Bedford Place, just off Russell Square, where it was believed the suspect was arrested. Forensic officers wearing protective suits examined the scene.
Mark Rowley, the Met’s assistant commissioner and Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer, addressed the media just after 3.30am London time.He said that, early indications from the investigation suggest mental health as the key factor behind the attack. But at this point they are also not doing away with the motive of terrorism.
The UK’s terrorism threat level remained at severe, meaning an attack was considered to be highly likely.
Extra police were immediately deployed in the area which is frequented mainly by students and tourists. Along with the attraction of the British Museum, the University of London and the University College of London are very close by. There are numerous hotels and restaurants in the area, including Hotel Russell and the Imperial.
