By 2020, number of outbound travelers from Thailand is expected to reach 10 million, which will be a 29% growth. Japan is expected to be the top destination for Thai visitors, due to a visa waiver for the Thais, launched in 2013. Many countries in Southeast Asia and East Asia are offering lucrative promotions and privileges to attract Thai tourists.
To quote Ittirit Kinglake, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), “Many attractive packages for Thai people plus extra privileges from hotels and airlines are working. Total Thai tourists are expected to reach 10 million within the next three years, up from 7.74 million in 2016.”
The 20th Thai International Travel Fair in February this year drew national tourism organizations and major operators from China, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia and South Korea for attracting the Thai tourist market. 7.74 million Thai tourists travelled abroad last year, which is an increase of 13.9% from 2015. Among them, half of the visitors opted for neighboring countries, especially Laos, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar and southern China. In 2015, Japan was the most popular destination for the Thai visitors, welcoming around 796,700 visitors from Thailand. Thai tourists spent an average of 30,064 baht per overseas trip last year.
