Emergency officials managed to rescue ten people from under the snowy rubble after a massive avalanche buried them along with 20 more people at the Italian luxury resort ‘Hotel Rigopiano’, situated in the Abruzzo region.
The avalanche struck the luxury hotel on 18th January, Wednesday, after a series of earthquakes hit central Italy. Since that moment, all the ten survivors were trapped under the snow along with 20 other guests of the hotel.
During the rescue operation, an official urged through the firefighters’ radio to send a helicopter as they managed to find five people alive under the snowy grave.
Initially the spokesperson for the national fire brigade, Luca Cari informed that the five people were alive and were talking to the rescue officers. After a while, the rescue team managed to find five more people under the rubble.
The operations chief at Italy’s civil protection agency, Titi Postiglione informed that the survivors could give them a series of indications to help with their intervention plan, information to understand what happened and help direct the search.
The rescue officials also informed that the survivors were in remarkably good condition as an air pocket in the kitchen area of the hotel helped them to breathe before the rescue team reached them.
The rescuer Marco Bini informed that after they found smoke and a few small fires inside the rubble, they started to dig that area.
All the survivors were taken to the nearby hospitals with the help of a helicopter. Authorities also informed that amongst the 10 rescued people, four were children.
The local authorities believed that around 34 people got trapped under the snow after the avalanche. The rescue officials confirmed that four of the trapped people lost their lives and around 20 had to be rescued.
As the rescue team is using shovels to dig out the trapped people from under the rubble, the rescue mission is running at a slow pace.
