112 per cent more Cambodian tourists visited Malaysia – Jan-Aug 18′

Out of the 46 countries visiting the Southeast Asian nation Malaysia, the largest increase was seen in the number of Cambodian tourists in the first eight months of 2018.

Tourism Malaysia data showed that 56,290 Cambodians visited Malaysia in 2018 over January to August, as compared to only 26,526 visitors in 2017, for the same period.

Cambodia and Malaysia agents are working hand-in-glove to promote newer destinations in Malaysia.

There are several factors that are driving the tourism growth figures between both nations.

Cambodian outbound tourism is gradually rising. About 1.75 million Cambodians travelled abroad in 2017, as compared to 1.43 million in 2016 revealed the Ministry of Tourism.

Riding on the cocktails of the stable economy and rising standard of living, more Cambodians are now travelling to neighbouring countries and beyond.

According to Tourism Malaysia, about 17 million tourists visited the country in the first eight months of this year. In 2017, Malaysia received about 25 million foreign tourists and earned U.S. dollar 19 billion in revenue. The government has set a target to attract 36 million tourists by 2020.

Malaysia is known for shopping, honeymoon, backpacking, culinary and many affordable airlines serve the route to Malaysia said Chhay Sivlin, President of Cambodia Association of Travel Agents.

Affordable attractive travel packages and cheaper tickets have further fuelled the outbound traffic.

As per Chhay, Cambodia-Malaysia short-haul sector is tapping students, business people and religious travellers, as a transit hub for their onward journey. Senior travellers prefer a more relaxed holiday and prefer to visit main attraction sites only.

Malaysia continues to position itself as an exciting tourist destination, promoting diverse tourist attractions, affordable travel for all segments of tourists and boasts modern infrastructure.
