A major power disruption at the LaGuardia Airport Terminal C was held responsible for the cancellation and delay of more than 150 flights. According to the reports, the power went out at 4:30 a.m. on Friday following a accidental cutting of two electrical feeder cables.
Delta Air Lines cancelled about 168 mainline and connection flights due to the power outage. The Port Authority of New York and Delta worked to get backup power. With the help of gas-fueled backup generators, electricity was restored about five hours later.
Power was restored to the terminal jet bridges as of 8:30 a.m., but some portions of Terminal C still do not have power for items like air conditioning, escalators, moving walkways and concessions.
Delta Air Lines announced that all the affected customers with tickets for July 24 and 25 at all New York City-area airports (LaGuardia, JFK, Newark Liberty, Stewart-Newburgh and White Plains) can make changes to their trips without change fees through July 28.
