An article highlighting Kilkenny appeared in a recent edition of Traveller in Australia, profiling the city to more than 2 million readers – or potential Australian holidaymakers for Kilkenny and the South East.

Traveller is the holiday and travel supplement with The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers. Tourism Ireland in Sydney invited journalist Daniel Scott to visit Kilkenny this summer. The resulting article appeared under the headline “Why Kilkenny is cool for cats” and featured some of the city’s top visitor attractions, including Kilkenny Castle, the National Craft Gallery and the Smithwick’s Experience. The writer said that a “dynamic pulse thumps through Kilkenny’s old veins”. He also profiled some of Kilkenny’s festivals, including the Cats Laughs Comedy Festival and the Kilkenny Arts Festival, as well as great places to eat, drink and sleep, like Campagne, Tynan’s Bridge House Bar and the Hibernian Hotel.

Sofia Hansson, Tourism Ireland’s manager Australia, said: “We are delighted with the excellent exposure for Kilkenny in ‘Traveller’, which is an excellent way of showcasing the city and county to a large audience of potential holidaymakers in Australia. Publicity is an important element of our overall promotional programme, helping to raise awareness through the Australian media of the many things to see and do on a holiday in the South East and elsewhere around the island of Ireland.”

Sofia Hansson continued: “2015 will be another record year for visitor numbers to the island of Ireland from Australia and developing markets. By the end of this year, we will have welcomed about 578,000 visitors from those markets. Tourism Ireland has undertaken an extensive programme of promotions right throughout 2015, building awareness of the island of Ireland as a premier holiday destination. We look forward to building on this year’s success in 2016 and beyond.”
