The Isis completely broke the defense line of the Syrian government and this has cropped fears as there are chances that fundamentalist group will damage the ancient cities of Damascus and Homs once they advance further.
There is a 2000 year old towering Roman era colonnade which was frequently visited by tourists before war broke out in the region.
There is a great deal of speculation as Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria’s director-general of antiquities and museums expressed his views that destroying these relics would be a destruction of a civilization. The large monuments cannot be moved to museums and in the face of destruction, none of it may survive.
As war continues fears for the ancient city being destroyed continues to linger and one can only hope that the Isis will have more respect for ancient architecture this time.
