The Salerno to Reggio Calabria motorway which is probably the oldest construction work in the slowest progression, starting in 1966 will soon be completed said Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi. The final 20km stretch of motorway, from Laino Borgo to Campotenese, which is the part that remains unreconstructed, will finish in November 2017.
The unfinished autostrada has brought a lot of rage from journalists and experts owing to the time the construction work has taken.Work in the 443 Km road in the toe of the Italian boot has been delayed due to faulty construction , scandals, bad management and rampant corruption. Public work in Italy takes a slow and ugly turn which is apparent in the construction of the Reggio Calabria motorway. The motorway will run from south of Naples, down to the capital of the Calabria region from Campania, it passes through the ‘Ndrangheta badlands, including towns such as Rosarno and Gioia Tauro.
The Prime Minister in his bid to modernise Italy said that by the end of 2015 all sites will be completed and with special mention to the Salerno-Reggio Calabria. He said that the site will be completed in 2017. The task will be accomplished by 3,000 workers who would put their services night and day for seven days a week to meet the deadline of finishing the 50 years old construction. The 20 km stretch of motorway is yet to be completed and there are many speculations on how the stretched would be constructed in one more year.
