French Government is all engaged in constructing a 8.2-foot-high, bulletproof glass enclosed space around the base of the Eiffel Tower to defend the iconic structure from any kind of terrorist attack in the future. However, many French people are quite offended at this construction as it looked tasteless in front of the eminent structure.
To quote Bernard Thiebaut, a retired electrical engineer from Paris, ‘’ its pure madness! It’s not just a physical barrier, it’s also a philosophical and a psychological barrier.”
Common people however protested against this $20 million project with tremendous uproar. Nevertheless, Deputy Mayor Jean-Francois Martins defended the plan. To Martins, ‘’ The terror threat remains high in Paris and the most vulnerable sites, led by the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures.’’
He said that glass wall will provide a clear and full view of the tower prohibiting vehicles and individuals to create any kind of terrorist attack on the attraction that lures more than 6 million tourists across the globe every year. The wall would be up by fall this year and critics think that this step could slump French tourism even more as it’s already going low post terrorist attack 2015.
