Sea, sun and warm but not only. Sardinia offers so much all year long thanks to its mild climate, the different landscapes that change and chase themselves: from golden beaches to rocky mountains, green and full of hiding places. From the city to the remote small villages in the hinterland that still preserve the traditions of Sardinia. From the sea ideal for swimming up to the mountain peaks where it is also possible to ski, of course it is not Everest, but you can practise all these activities in a island just 24,000 km2 large.
Historically, Sardinia has been an autonomous ecosystem, which handed down its traditions for centuries and holds many secrets. Some people said Sardinia would be Atlantis: Plato said Atlantis was in fact a land already old for the ancients, a land of silver veins, a land rich of towers. Features that you can assign to Sardinia.
But if this is a legend, longevity of Sardinian people is a fact.
For someone depends on food, according to others from a typical wines of this land (Cannonau), for sure there is that Sardinia has a large number of centenarians, equal to a few other regions in the world. For this reason there are numerous studies that analyse the DNA of the population.
Maybe the longevity depends on its lifestyle. In last month an important exhibition show how you can live all year long Sardinia practising all kind of sports you like. That was Bitas the main international tourism exhibition in Sardinia.
For example you can start discovering Sardinia during the summer, exploring its centuries of beaches (one so different from the others): most of them are made of white sands but you can find also black sand (in Bosa) because the mineral of the area. But you’ll find dunes too, vertiginous cliffs, and even white rocks of granite. Each beach is different and has its own reason. And most of all, in every beach you can practise a different sport: from simple swim or snorkelling that allows you to see so many varieties of fishes that live in the Mediterranean Sea. Varieties that are collected and displayed in the newest and largest aquarium of Sardinia (in Dorgali) which hosted the last edition of Bitas (the International Tourism Exchange active in Sardinia).
In Sardinian seas is possible to do other sports as well: from kayoing to climbing on the sea up to free diving. Really exciting were the stories about the world champion David Carrera that in Cala Gonone (Dorgali) signed a new world record in the days of international exposition. Plunging into the depths of the earth, where the clear water becomes more and more dark, plunging alone with themselves (and ready to challenge themselves) is exciting just watching it.
Similar emotion, but full of adrenaline, is sailing: another sport that can be practised in Sardinia. This island is also known for being the island of winds and therefore well suited to sailing. Again, these crossings, the difficulty and challenge themselves in solo transoceanic have been told to Bitas from another Sardinian record-man (but international) Gaetano Mura. The sea as the way to live and to tell, to cuddle as a life partner.
Once you left the sea you can choose to relaxing on the beach or in one of the several towns and villages of Sardinia. The main city, in the South, is Cagliari that with 12 km of beach offers the ideal combination of city life and holiday. Cagliari (500,000 inhabitants with the surrounding towns) according to many researchers is one of the best city in Italy for quality of life with no frenetic times of the metropolis that offers sun and warm temperature seven months a year.
But every place has its reason. In the north est part there is Nuoro, for example, close to Dorgali where Bitas took place, there are the mountain villages that live mostly of agriculture, livestock, but have also sea territories. And so the sea meets country and mountains, the opened mind people of sailors meet the most reserved of the mountains to blend in perfect harmony. A few kilometres from the beach you leave your bathing suit to get the sweater, you forget the fish dishes to taste meats, cheeses, cured meats and full-bodied and proud as a people that produces red wine (called Cannonau). And here also the sports change …left always the baith suit you can wear the sport suits to for climbing, trekking among the unexplored paths of the Supramonte. Supramonte is a fascinating place and so impervious that often the inexperienced hikers get lost among the thick vegetation. A place where in the past lived Sardinian bandits hidden in the several caves camouflaged among the rocks. And in these rocks also cavers now come to explore the bowels of the earth.
Safer, then, could be get on a mountain bike to the fastest laps on paths already marked. And for the more adventurous people why don’t try a nice hang-gliding or paragliding from the high mountains to the plains and get softer or at the beach where they then take flight in Kyte. Or like so many do, choosing competitions composite where the race alternates trekking and bike or other…like triathlon.
So Sardinia offers a lot for those people who want to make a not traditional or conventional holiday, an active holiday where sunbathing is not just lie on the beach towel in the beach or a round of golf to relax. And that was the spirit of Bitas who wants to make people know another side of Sardinia in the world.
