The charity will be given the unique opportunity to work alongside the Airport to raise valuable funds for its great cause throughout the upcoming year. The search for Southampton Airport’s Charity of the Year began back in November and a staggering 51 charities in total applied to partner with the Airport. This will be the first year that Southampton Airport has run a Charity of the Year partnership.
Where there’s a Will is a charity that supports patients, as well as their family and friends, whilst they are on the General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) at Southampton General Hospital. They look at offering comfort and support to relatives who find themselves waiting to hear the news about their loved ones as well as support and home visits after patients have been discharged from the hospital. Where there’s a Will also works within the community raising awareness of the needs of those who have been affected by critical illness.
The Southampton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s GICU provides care for people who are seriously ill and takes in patients who have just come out from the operating theatre, or anyone who has been admitted following a trauma or as an emergency case.
Throughout 2016 the charity will be organising 6 fundraising events to be held in the main concourse at the Airport which will engage with passengers and staff with the aim of raising as much money as possible for its cause. The charity will also work with Southampton Airport to help organise the Summer Solstice Sprint which will take place on the runway at dawn on Sunday 12th June2016. All income from the Summer Solstice Sprint will go directly to Where There’s a Will.
Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing and Communications at Southampton Airport, says “. We received over 50 applications to be our first ever Charity of the Year and we are delighted to have chosen Where There’s a Will as our partner to help raise money for their wonderful cause. We look forward to working together throughout 2016, not only to raise funds, but also to raise the profile of the excellent work that takes place in the GICU at Southampton General Hospital.”
Heather Parsons, Founder and Director of Where There’s a Will, says “Where There’s a Will is delighted to now be working in partnership with Southampton Airport as, just like the airport, our facilities are centered upon Southampton but our users can come from across the region and some, particularly those from the Channel Islands, travel in via the airport.”
Where there’s a Will charity will be using the funds raised in partnership with Southampton Airport to redevelop and refurbish the Southampton GICU Waiting Room to provide more facilities and so make it more comfortable for visitors at a time when the wait can feel unbearable.
