The preparation of Oman’s new long-term tourism strategy (2015-2040) has entered a very advanced stage and it is scheduled to be unveiled in September this year. This was revealed by Maitha bint Saif al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary, Ministry of Tourism, here yesterday while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the first training program about the implementation of the same tourism strategy.
Subsequently, the strategy will be submitted to the Ministerial Cabinet for final approval, she added, and affirmed that the entire process would be complete by the end of this year.
The aim of the long-term tourism strategy is to increase the contribution of tourism industry to GDP, generate jobs and make sure that sustainable tourism grows steadily in the Sultanate, Al Mahrouqi told this reporter.
The first three-day training program about the tools needed for an expeditious implementation of Oman’s Tourism Strategy, which began yesterday under the auspices of Ahmed bin Nasser al Mahrazi, Minister of Tourism, is part of nine such workshops which will continue till September, she added.
The workshop, conducted ably by Ghada Abdul Haleem, hosted a large number of stakeholders including the Ministry of Tourism officials, media experts, and other stakeholders who have a role in the tourism industry.
The event covered several themes such as introduction and fundamentals of strategy execution; application of strategy execution in government, leadership in strategy execution, challenges, recommendations and the way forward, conclusion and open discussion.
The new strategy, which is designed to add great value to the Sultanate’s tourism industry, includes an action plan to achieve its goals.
The remaining workshops will focus on important themes including methodology basics, tourism marketing, experiences and the development of the tourism product, participation of local communities, governance and management, investment opportunities for SMEs, and development of human capital.
The ministry in co-operation with the THR Innovative Tourism Advisors will conduct these training and educational workshops till September, when the strategy will be unveiled.
One of the key objectives of the Omani tourism strategy is to increase the contribution of the tourism sector to the GDP which is considered to be as a major source of income. Also, it is closely linked to the process of sustainable development.
