tourism tasmania logoThe Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Tasmania’s West Coast and recent increases in tourist numbers vindicates our decision to help transition the region’s economy.
While we continue to be fully behind the mining industry, it became clear after the closure of CMT that diversification would help the West Coast cope with fluctuations in commodity prices.
The Tasmanian Government committed $2.47 million to a West Coast rescue package which including highway and track improvements, mining and safety training courses and mentoring and support programs for local businesses, including 22 local tourism operators.
The most recent Tasmanian Visitor Survey reported 176,355 visitors to the West Coast for the 12 months ending September 2015 – an 11 per cent increase on the previous year which also enjoyed a 14 per cent increase the previous year.
That 25 per cent increase in 2 years shows that the West Coast is evolving as a unique visitor destination and credit should be given to Tourism Tasmania, the Cradle Coast Authority and West Coast Council for their co-ordinated approach.
We always understood that mining would remain an important sector for the West Coast but these increased visitor numbers prove that the West Coast Economic Work Group was on the right path when it supported tourism infrastructure projects in its report to the Government.
Anecdotally Tasmania is currently enjoying a record tourism summer and many of these international visitors are looking for the unique nature and scenic experiences which abound on the West Coast as well as action tourism, like mountain bike riding.
The Tasmanian Government is committed to creating jobs and stimulating regional economies and we welcome these recent excellent West Coast tourism figures.
