Powerful winter storm hits California

Wisconsin winter storm spoils travel plansA winter storm moved across California on Sunday, bringing powerful winds, heavy rain and snow, to Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Wind gusts topped 50 mph in the San Diego area and 65 mph in Malibu, according to the National Weather Service. The highest reading of the day was at Whitaker Peak, north of Castaic, where a gust was recorded at 115 mph.

Officials warned that the storm is forecast to bring heavy rain and a risk of flash floods, especially in recently burned areas that could see mud flow down hillsides.

Strong winds were expected to cause flight problems at Los Angeles International Airport, and forecasters said there was enough instability aloft that there could be a 36% chance of thunderstorms in parts of the L.A. area. Waterspouts and even weak tornadoes are possible.

A motorist was fatally struck by a tree that toppled as the winter storm moved across California. Strong winds downed dozens of trees and power poles and ripped off rooftops — and in one case, solar panels — across Southern California.
