The RMT union member have voted in favour of a month-long strike, passengers commuting through South Western Railway (SWR) services will be able to rely on their trains for only two days in December.
There has been a dispute over the role of guards between the union with SWR and other train operators. The union has ordered its members to walk out on every day next month apart from Sunday 1 and Thursday 12 December which is the date of the General Election.
On December 25 and 26 the guards will not technically be striking and SWR would not be running any trains.
Commuters in and out of the UK’s busiest railway station will be affected by the stoppage.
London Waterloo on trains to and from southwest London , Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. Those returning home to Devon from the capital for Christmas will also be affected because SWR provides cheaper trains to Exeter.
The RMT general secretary, Mick Cash stated that their our members have been left with no choice but to call a further 27 days of strike action on South Western Railway.
Till the time the company continues to refuse to give assurances on the future operational role of the guard they will remain in dispute.
He congratulated their members on their continued efforts to resolve in their flight for safety and the role of guard on SWR. It was down to the management side that the core issues of the safety competencies and the role of guard was not agreed.
The union was available for talks.
Rail strikes, services on the main lines have operated at about half the usual frequency and the branch rail services have been cancelled altogether. Some of them were replaced by buses.
