Even as international tourism posted 4% growth in the first half of this year, an appeal has been made by Pope Francis for a sustainable, nondiscriminatory tourist industry in a tweet to his 30 million followers.
The papal tweet coincided with the United Nations annual World Tourism Day. “Let us promote a sustainable tourism, which stimulates development and encounter with local peoples and avoids every sort of discrimination,” he wrote on his ninelanguage @pontifex account.
World Tourism Day was hosted this year by the Thai capital Bangkok under the theme ‘Tourism for All — Promoting Universal Accessibility’.
At around 561 million, the number of international tourists surged 21 million between January and June compared to the same period a year earlier.
