But then, local tourists and permanent residents are exempted from paying the tax. Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) President Sam Cheah Swee Hee said that hotel operators had started the collection of tourism tax on Friday that is 11th September.
However, all the hotels around Malaysia are currently not ready to follow suit. They have decided to do it manually till the system is ready to be worked upon.
Cheah said that hoteliers would be submitting their collection to the Customs and Excise Department by next month. The Customs and Excise Department is following an amiable approach to motivate hotels and lodging operators to register for the tourism tax, according to Datuk Seri Subromanian Tholasy who is the Director-General of this department.
The government declared early last month that the tourism tax was to be brought into effect from Friday.
Subromaniam said that the department would be making attempts to contact hotel operators who are yet to register instead of following a harsh approach. The number of registered accommodation providers till date is 5,000 out of the estimated 10,000 establishments across the nation.
He added that they would be giving one more month to hotel operators of this region. And, they are expected to register by the end of September.
Bernama has reported that hoteliers must display the freshly introduced Tourism Tax rate separately from the room rates with the implementation of this new tourism tax.
John Teo Peng Yew, Secretary-General of Malaysian Association of Hotels (Sarawak Chapter) said that this tourism tax would be exempted from GST.
