6.1 magnitude earthquake forces Central China residents out of their houses in -20°C

earthquakeA 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit central China leaving people petrified as they ran out of their homes and spent their night in cars in minus 20 degrees.

 

The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km (6miles) in Menyuan county in Qinghai province. About a dozen houses were damaged but no casualties were reported.

 

The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 10km, was followed minutes later by a 3.4-magnitude aftershock. The reason for no causalities was because the epicentre of the quake was in an unpopulated area.

 

54 houses however were damaged, with 20 having cracks and holes on the wall. Phone services were operating normally in the region.150, 000 people reside in Menyuan. Xining province capital and neighbouring Gansu province also felt the tremors.
