Taiwan was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake causing damage to structures, as 17 residential buildings collapsed in Tainan. More than 200 people were rescued from the debris of the damaged structures. Around 150 were severely injured and hospitalised. Two were reported dead.
According to local sources buildings were shaking violently before dawn struck. All items in the room spilled on the floor due to a 45 degree tilt. There was frenzy as people started running for help into open grounds. Local television footage reveals dust bellowing from destructed buildings.
121,672 homes in Tainan city was left without power. According to the U.S. Geological Survey the tremor was centered about 48 kilometers (30 miles) east-southeast of Tainan. The city is the oldest in Taiwan and has a population of 1.9 million.
