A 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit northeast India in the early hours of Monday killing atleast eight and injuring hundred in Manipur which was the epicenter of the quake according to the USGS.
Many houses in Imphal the capital of Manipur saw huge cracks on the wall and some buildings also collapsed. The epicenter of the quake was in the Tamenglong district at Noney village, about 35 km from Imphal in Manipur. The earthquake occurred country’s highest Zone V earthquake risk zone.
The worst affected appears to be the Mother’s Market or the ‘Ima Keithel’ area. It is home to lots of buildings, private houses, a hospital and the city’s press club. A number of electricity lines have been damaged and many areas are without power. The injured were admitted in the main regional hospital in Imphal.
The tremors could be felt clearly in Guwahati as people were seen running out of their houses towards open spaces. People in Kolkata also felt the tremors in the early hours of Monday.
