An IT glitch has led to the cancellation of 91 flights of British Airways and there were fires near the railway lines.
According to the airline 81 flights which were due to operate to and from Heathrow were cancelled and another 10 Gatwick flights were also affected.
Around 200 other flights were delayed and some ran more than five hours behind schedule.
BA passengers posted images on social showing long queues of holidaymaker along with an error message with the BA app which led to the cancellation.
The airline confirmed they faced a ‘system issue’ which affected check-in and flight departures with Heathrow, Gatwick and London city affected.
It was further confirmed that it was not a global IT outage.
According to a global BA spokesman they were working as quickly as possible to resolve the system issue that caused short-haul cancellations and delays from London airports.
Some of the flights will remain operative but customers were advised to check the British Airways website to get the latest flight information before coming to the airport.
Customers will get the opportunity to rebook to another day those who availed short-haul services departing from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City today.
Passengers should allow additional time to the airport and British Airways was using the back-up and manual systems to cope up with the issues.
