The Hong Kong Sevens 2024 is set to captivate audiences at the iconic Hong Kong Stadium from April 5th to 7th, 2024. The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is orchestrating an invitation for the city to immerse itself in the exhilarating world of rugby. Collaborating with the Hong Kong China Rugby Union (HKCR), HKTB will establish an outdoor fan zone at the Central Harboufront. Here, fans can enjoy live game broadcasts, extending the electrifying atmosphere from the stadium to the heart of the city.

Adding to the excitement, renowned rugby enthusiasts James and Oliver Phelps, famously known as the Weasley Twins from the Harry Potter movie series, will be among the attendees, ready to soak in the unique rugby fervor that Hong Kong has to offer.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary at the Hong Kong Stadium this year, the Sevens bids farewell to Causeway Bay. Tickets for the event have been completely sold out before kick-off, marking the first time since the pandemic outbreak. The international support for the event, particularly from fans in the UK, Australia, and Fiji, has been remarkable. Organizers reveal that over 40% of ticket sales are attributed to visitors. Anticipated attendance at the Hong Kong Stadium this weekend exceeds 120,000, as spectators gather to witness the thrilling matches between 30 teams hailing from Argentina, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and beyond.

Collaborative Launch of Thematic Tourism Offerings with International Travel Agencies

In a bid to entice visitors to the event, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has initiated a series of comprehensive global promotions. Leveraging its extensive international network, HKTB has meticulously crafted promotional strategies aimed at specific markets and demographics. These initiatives include the creation of exclusive tourism packages and media experiences spotlighting the excitement of the Hong Kong Sevens, aimed at bolstering global traveler awareness of Hong Kong’s premier events.

For example, in markets with established rugby cultures like Australia and South Korea, HKTB extends invitations to media representatives to journey to Hong Kong, offering them firsthand exposure to the dynamic atmosphere of the mega event. Furthermore, HKTB collaborates closely with travel agencies in Australia to develop Sevens-themed tourism products, precisely tailored to cater to discerning high-spending clientele.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has extended invitations to both rugby enthusiasts and the Harry Potter stars, James and Oliver Phelps, to attend the games in Hong Kong. As hosts, HKTB organized a day tour for the twins yesterday, Thursday, inviting Hong Kong team captain Max Woodward and female rugby player Chloe Chan to accompany them, exploring the city’s attractions and culinary delights.

Beginning their journey, the group embarked on the iconic Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui and indulged in local delicacies such as fishball noodles and wontons at nearby noodle stalls. Their adventure continued with a ride on the historic Peak Tram to Victoria Peak, where they marveled at the breathtaking skyline of Victoria Harbour, capturing moments at the Sky Terrace 428, the city’s highest observation deck. Venturing further, the twins explored Hong Kong Island via the iconic trams, immersing themselves in local culture with a city walk through Old Town Central, visiting landmarks like Lascar Road and the Man Mo Temple. Subsequently, the twins will share highlights of their Hong Kong trip across their social media platforms, facilitating HKTB’s mission to showcase the city’s unique allure through celebrity visits.

On the second day of the games, Saturday, the twins will join fellow spectators in the south stand, embracing the vibrant atmosphere of the Hong Kong Stadium and experiencing firsthand the city’s reputation as a hub for mega-events. They will dress up for photo shoots with other attendees, embracing the carnivalistic charm of the event and embodying the spirit of participation.

Enhanced Stadium Experience for Elevated Atmosphere

To ensure an electrifying atmosphere, additional performances will be staged within the stadium, enhancing the overall vibe of the event. The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is taking steps to amplify the excitement surrounding the games, beginning with captivating dancing dragons and lions at the opening ceremony, aimed at energizing both players and spectators. Furthermore, the conclusion of the three-day event will be marked by dazzling pyrotechnic displays, adding a touch of glamour and spectacle.

Expanding the Festivities Citywide

In collaboration with the Hong Kong China Rugby Union (HKCR), HKTB is introducing an outdoor fan zone dubbed “7s in the City” at AIA Vitality Park, adjacent to the iconic Hong Kong Observation Wheel. Tickets for the fan zone can be conveniently purchased in advance through the website (See Appendix I). Within this vibrant hub, attendees can immerse themselves in the excitement of the Sevens matches via live broadcasts on a giant screen, while also indulging in culinary delights from food booths and beverage bars.

Family-Friendly Fun

While adult fans indulge in the games, children are invited to delight in the dinosaur-themed playground, Dinoland, ensuring an enjoyable weekend for the whole family within the fan zone.

Igniting Excitement Across the City

In an effort to ignite widespread enthusiasm, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is collaborating with Cathay and the MTR Corporation to infuse the spirit of the event into numerous locations throughout the city, spanning MTR stations and bus stops. This initiative aims to cultivate a city-wide ambiance pulsating with rugby fervor.

This year, Cathay has curated a collection of HK7s badges incorporating elements of Hong Kong’s rich local culture. Keep an eye out for these distinctive badges scattered across various MTR stations, adding a unique touch to your journey through the city.
