A Technical Committee for the Review of the nation’s Tourism Master Plan was inaugurated by the Federal Government on Wednesday in Abuja. Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture said after launching the committee that the government is committed toward moving tourism from the margin to the mainstream of Nigerian economy.
He further said that the committee would review the country’s tourism plan to match with the current trends and go a long way in repositioning the tourism sector. He said that the past administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo realised the need for improving the tourism sector and setting up a master plan for the country in 2005.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the UNWTO for development of the master plan. He regretted that the committee set up earlier for implementation of the master plan failed in its tasks and nothing was done to realize the plans. He said that during his recent visit to the UNWTO headquarters in Madrid, the organization volunteered to assist the country for reviewing the master plan. A team of experts from the global body would arrive in Nigeria on the 4th of December for working with the committee and review the process.
