Consumer group Which? report stated that U.K. rail passengers lost an estimated 3.9 million hours to delays in 2018.

Trains arriving at the destination 30 minutes or more late was covered by the data and was based on the 8.1 million journeys that took place last year.

The late definition was fit for about 80 trains a day.Rail Delivery Group, which representing the  operators, said that rail companies were working together to improve punctuality.

The numbers of cancelled trains stood at 660 trains.

According to Which? it was the highest figure for cancellation as compared to the records in 2011. The results were compiled based on the Office of Rail and Road data.

The torrid time passenger groups faced last year, they wished to avoid it and thousands of trains were cancelled due to change of timetables.Train reliability was brought down due to weather, strikes and signaling failures last year.

Neena Bhati, the group’s head of campaigns said that passengers have faced a torrid time on the trains since the beginning of last year where the rail industry has fundamentally failed on punctuality and reliability.

People will then face a messy and complex compensation system which puts them off claiming when things go wrong.

It was found that 36% of passengers did not claim delay compensations they owned and made suggestions that payments should be automatic.

Robert Nisbet, regional director of industry body the Rail Delivery Group said that they knew that services on some routes weren’t good enough last year and rail companies were working together to improve punctuality and tackle delays across the country.

Further, the train companies wanted to make a simple procedure for customers to claim compensation if they experienced delay.
