Accor_Hotels_switch_offFor the tenth consecutive year, AccorHotels will ‘switch off’ for Earth Hour on Saturday March 19, 2016, to draw attention to the effects of climate change and show its support for a low pollution, clean energy future.

In each state across Australia, over 50 AccorHotels properties including; Pullman Sydney Hyde Park, Mercure Melbourne Treasury Gardens, Novotel Barossa Valley Resort, ibis Styles Alice Springs, Sofitel Brisbane Central, The Reef House Palm Cove, MGallery Collection and ibis Perth will partake in the global event, turning off or significantly reducing lighting come 8:30pm local time on Saturday.

This year, hotels are encouraging guests to get involved by offering a number of fun activities including; candlelit dinners, glow stick art, earth menu specials that utilise less power and ‘Earth Cocktail Hour’ for guests to mix and mingle as they show their support for cutting carbon pollution and transition to a renewable energy future.

Chief Operating Officer AccorHotels Pacific, Simon McGrath, says “Everyone, including large organisations, have the power to drive action on climate change. Earth Hour is a fantastic initiative that brings to light the impact of climate change and supports our commitment to sustainable business practices. Although the 60 minutes has a limited impact on energy use, it raises great awareness amongst our employees and guests of various environmental challenges, whilst promoting behavioural changes that last well beyond the event itself.”

Through AccorHotels’ global sustainable development programme, Planet21, the Group has made 21 commitments in favour of social, environmental and community investment actions. This commitment to sustainable development dates back to 1994, when the Group created a department charged with mitigating its hotels’ environmental impacts.
