Mr Neumeister joined AEA from a senior post in Lufthansa in 1983 and headed the Association until 2002. During his period of office, the European airline industry was totally transformed, from a highly regulated structure of nationally-owned and protected ‘flag carriers’, to today’s ultra-competitive market within the EU and around the world.
During the period of transition in Europe, Neumeister’s AEA was heavily involved in advising the policy-makers and instrumental in shaping the liberalisation process. The Association, too, was undergoing fundamental change, as its focus shifted from information and research to a much more political role, as the interface between its members and their new European regulators.
Karl-Heinz Neumeister, both personally and through the organisation which he fashioned and led for 19 years, will be remembered as a significant contributor to the development of the European airline sector.
