Agile railwayMiracles do happen! Hundreds of passengers of three trains had a miraculous escape when two railway patrolmen found four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted on the tracks along the Kamakhya-New Bongaigaon section in Goalpara district on Friday morning.

NF Railway chief public relations officer (CPRO) Sugato Lahiri said that the four IEDs were recovered from the railway tracks between Dudhnoi and Krishnai stations, about 110km from Guwahati.

“It was two on-duty railway patrolmen—Ganesh Routh and B K Sahu—who detected the IEDs at about 6.30am.

They were defused and removed from the site at about 8.20am by the local police and security clearance was obtained from the police at 8.55am for running of trains,” the CPRO said.

An official source said the IEDs were detected just before three long-distance trains were scheduled to pass through the area.

The Kamakhya-Danapur Capital Express was the first train to cross the area, but the timely detection prevented a major disaster. After the alert was raised, the train was detained for about two hours at Dudhnoi station.

Similarly, the Howrah-Guwahati Saraighat Express and Yesvantpur-Dibrugarh Express were diverted via the New Bongaigaon-Changsari section on the north bank.
