The flight, an Airbus A320 was carrying 144 passengers and five crew members from Toronto. It landed at Lethbridge Airport just after 6.30 pm (local time). No injuries were reported.
Air Canada officials said in a statement to the media that, as per our standard operating procedures, the captain diverted to the closest airport, and the flight landed at Lethbridge Airport normally and without issue.
The Lethbridge Fire Department, RCMP, Lethbridge Police, airport and Lethbridge County officials, all responded and were on scene.
Ron Lamane, an LFD platoon chief said that, they got a call at 17:45 from dispatch saying there was a mayday by an Air Canada jet coming into Lethbridge. LFD had two engines, a rescue vehicle and four ambulances ready.
Calgary was hit by major storm Saturday that saw hail the size of ping pong balls fall north of the city.
The area is often referred to as “Hailstorm Alley,” which extends from just south of Calgary into central Alberta. The region typically sees more than 40 hail storms every summer causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
