It was carrying 340 people on board, all of whom had little choice but to restrain their bladders simply because all the toilets on the flight were dysfunctional. A Delhi-Chicago Boeing 777 had taken off around 2 a.m. on Saturday for a 16 hour flight.
There were 16 crew members on the aircraft, apart from the 324 travellers who had been flying to Chicago with just eight of its twelve toilets that were in working condition. The spokespersons of Air India said that all the toilets had been clogged because of the presence of plastic bottles and sanitary napkins stuck inside the pies. It is assumed that they were thrown in by fliers.
But then, the efforts to remove all of them were unsuccessful.
The airline staff had made attempts to clear the four toilets with nitrogen flushing. However, when the attempts were unsuccessful, the flight took off anyway, with a minimum of eight functional toilets. A few of the toilets had become full in just a few hours of take off.
By the end of 16 hours, all the bathrooms were clogged.
The situation got really bad. Therefore, the crew members had even thought of landing in Toronto for a break. But then, the crew members and the AI ground authorities made a joint decision to land straight in Chicago instead.
In its official statement, Air India mentioned that the plane would be grounded in Chicago until all the lavatories are in working condition.
