An Air India aircraft with 149 passengers onboard averted a fatal accident when the plane had a tyre burst during landing at the Sheikh ul Alam International airport in Srinagar. All passengers onboard were safely evacuated and no one was reportedly injured.
The incident was followed up with the cancellation of 13 flights from Srinagar on Monday. Officials said that the flight AI 821 that was coming from Jammu had a tyre burst at 2.10 pm when the plane was landing at the airport. The skidding of tyres caused little damage to the runway.
Airport officials said after the tyre burst, the operations at the runway were suspended and all the flights were cancelled. “After the incident 13 flights were cancelled. Other than the Air India plane that had a tyre burst is still in the middle of the runway, three other aircrafts are on the tarmac as they couldn’t take off,” said an official at the Srinagar Air traffic Control.
Initially some flights were delayed and few of them were diverted to Chandigarh, but then due to non availability of the runway all of them were cancelled. According to the latest reports, the restoration work of the runway is almost complete and flights will resume soon.
