National flag carrier Air Zimbabwe should consider re-introducing flights to Beijing through Singapore since it is a lucrative route which can be sustained, says Zimbabwean Ambassador to Singapore and Indonesia Alice Magecha.
The national airline could introduce two flights to Beijing, one passing through
Indonesia and the other through Singapore, she suggested in Singapore on
“We used to fly Air Zimbabwe through Singapore to Beijing. We gained a lot from this route because the people in the region, especially Central Africa, were utilizing Air Zimbabwe to get to Singapore,” she said.
Air Zimbabwe suspended regional and international flights two years ago after incurring huge debts with service providers, one of which impounded its plane at Gatwick Airport in London.
However, it has managed to resume daily flights to Victoria Falls, Bulawayo and Johannesburg after it leased two Airbus aircraft. The airline is trying to restore its viability following years of decline.
The national carrier managed to retire part of its debt, mostly owed to South African creditors, and also regained its membership of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which had been suspended over failure to conduct regular performance audits.
