Alitalia to fly Pope Francis to Kraków for World Youth Day 2016

alitaliaPope Francis is set to take off from Rome on Tuesday for a papal visit to Poland and attend World Youth Day 2016. Alitalia flight AZ4000 will take off at 2pm from Fiumicino for the two hour flight to Kraków. The Holy Father will visit the Second World War concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau and Polish sanctuaries while in Poland. Pope Francis will be welcomed at Rome airport by the Italian airline’s Chairman, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, and CEO Cramer Ball.


The papal flight will be operated by an Airbus A321 with three pilots and six flight attendants. Operations will be supervised by the Captain Alberto Colautti, 54. Sharing cockpit duties will be Captain Fabrizio Vivaldi, 49, and First Officer Giorgio Ripamonti, 53. Besides the papal delegation, representatives of both the Italian and international press will travel on board and looked after by the Alitalia’s team dedicated to special flights.


Alitalia has been the airline of choice for overseas Apostolic Journeys since 1964 when Pope Paul VI visited the Holy Land. The journey to Kraków will be the 157th papal flight operated by Alitalia.
