American Airlines has suspended the utilization of an onboard catering service at Los Angeles International Airport following an inspection that detected traces of listeria at the facility where some of its in-flight meals are prepared.
In a statement derived by a leading news media agency, American Airlines asserted that nobody has been sickened as a consequence of the bacteria that had been discovered during the frequent monitoring of the facility.
The airlines also mentioned in a statement that during the recent food safety audits conducted by Gate Gourmet of its facility at LAX that is utilized by several airlines they were informed that slight traces of listeria had been found on surfaces that do not come into contact with food including the drains and a few places on the floor of the facility, as declared by American Airlines in a statement obtained by the news agency.
American Airlines has added that none of the bacteria has been discovered on the food preparation surfaces inside the facility.
It has went on to add that Gate Gourmet has also placed a correction action plan to modify the issue, but that the airline has started acting ‘out of an abundance of caution’. The airline said that it continues to utilize Gate Gourmet as a caterer in other locales since listeria has not been detected anywhere else.
Gate Gourmet too has issued a statement detailing their ‘aggressive’ efforts to treat the issue that the company itself detected during inspection.
In the meanwhile American has stated that presently it is keen to look into alternate food service solutions with an aim to accommodate passengers flying out of LAX.
The airline has added that it is planning to work with other caterers in the area of Los Angeles or send out for meal delivery from other facilities. American said that it has started actively calling customers to notify them of any alterations to their meal service and is issuing electronic travel vouchers to those who have been affected.
