American Airlines flight returns after bird hit

American Airlines plane emergency landingMINETA SAN JOSE — An American Airlines Flight 1118 bound for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was forced to return to Mineta San Jose International Airport for an emergency landing soon after the plane struck a bird during takeoff this morning, an airport spokesperson said.

American Airlines Flight 1118 took off at 6:20 a.m. from San Jose, airport spokesperson Rosemary Barnes said. However, minutes later the aircraft struck a bird, disabling the plane’s engine No. 2, Barnes said.

The plane was able to safely turn around and land at the San Jose airport at 6:42 a.m. with no injuries reported on board, Barnes added.

The plane was able to taxi to a gate and its passengers were accommodated on another flight to their destination, according to the spokesperson.
