American Airlines Supports Those Who Serve

American AirlinesThis Veterans Day American Airlines and its employees will continue a long standing tradition of supporting and honoring our nation’s heroes — active military, veterans, first responders and their families through a variety of initiatives and programs including the eighth annual Salute to the Troops.

“American Airlines and its more than 100,000 employees have a deep sense of pride and gratitude for the men and women who have served and sacrificed so much to protect our nation and our freedoms,” said David Seymour, senior vice president, Integrated Operations at American and graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. “This gratitude and appreciation is evident by our crew of pilots and flight attendants, who have volunteered their time this Veterans Day to serve these heroes on a special charter flight to Las Vegas. These men and women will freely give of their time to fly more than 90 wounded, ill and injured veterans and their guests to a well-deserved weekend of healing and relaxation.”

Veterans Day 2016 comes on the heels of a record breaking Sky Ball XIV. Sky Ball is an annual black-tie event hosted by American and the Airpower Foundation dedicated to supporting members of the military and their families. This year’s Sky Ball XIV, held on Oct. 22, raised a record $2.5 million for non-profit organizations that help the military with support from more than 1,200 American Airlines employees who volunteered their time.

The funds raised from Sky Ball will allow the Airpower Foundation to contribute to funding projects that directly support thousands of our nation’s service members, veterans and their families like the Gary Sinise Foundation (GSF).  GSF works to serve our nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need. They do this by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen and build communities.

American recently expanded its longstanding partnership with GSF through the employee led fuel conservation program, Fuel Smart. Fuel savings come through a variety of means including simple tasks like closing the airplane window shades on a hot day, to reducing the use of auxiliary power units. Each quarter the savings are translated into financial contributions to American’s non-profit partner.

Since Fuel Smart launched in 2010, employees at American have generated more than $4 million dollars in donations through this program, and have helped more than 6,000 service members and their families travel to receive the support they need to heal.

“I am proud that at American Airlines, we treat every day as if it were Veterans Day,” said Capt. Jim Palmersheim, American’s senior manager – Military and Veterans Initiatives and a United States Army veteran. “While we can never adequately thank those who have worn the cloth of the nation and their families for their service and sacrifice, we are fully committed through our military and veterans’ programs, to make a tangible and positive impact to show our appreciation throughout the year.”

Customers can join American in support of veterans through the AAdvantage® Miles for All Who Serve program. The program provides assistance to organizations that work to support our men and women in uniform, veterans and their families. Customers can go to and donate their unused miles in support of all who serve.
