The Governor of American Samoa called on the territory’s Visitors Bureau for reviewing its long-term tourism development plan. He wants the review to include a focus on local developments and attractions. The current America Samoa Tourism Master Plan was completed more than 6 years ago with US Interior Department funding.
The Governor said that the Visitors Bureau needed to carry out another review as his administration prepared to start a new four-year term in two weeks. He said that American Samoa needs to improve local development before it could go out, market and spend a lot of money. The head of the Bureau said that securing adequate transportation and funding are the biggest challenges for the tourism industry of American Samoa.
However, the territory has expanded significantly despite the challenges and cruise ships visits have also grown considerably this year.
