Travel insurance claims show spirit of adventure in over 50’s

download (1)The over 50’s are submitting travel insurance claims from all four corners of the world, from Aruba to Australia and Mexico to Morocco – in a clear indication that their spirit of adventure is alive and kicking.

Travel insurance claims are being made by all ages over 50 (with the exception of 98 year olds) – with a handful (less than 1%) submitted by intrepid travellers as old as 99. The findings, which come from research carried out by CEGA, are based on analysis of more than 150,000 travel insurance claims from the over 50’s in the 3 years to December 2015.

CEGA, which provides global assistance, travel risk management and claims services, also reveals that more claims come from 66 and 67 year olds than from any other age over 50, that the majority of over 50’s claims (81%) come from 50-69 year olds and that claim rates drop steeply (by 40%) between the ages of 69 and 70.

Spain (21%), the US (8%), the UK (7.5%), France (7.5%) and Italy (5%) produce the most travel insurance claims from the over 50’s, with destinations such as Greece, Turkey, India, Australia, Egypt, Mexico and Thailand also well represented.

Cancellation and medical claims are most prevalent amongst the over 50’s, says CEGA, followed by baggage claims.

CEGA’s findings resonate with recent research carried out by Saga, revealing that two thirds of the over 50’s travel more frequently than they did ten years ago and that over a third now travel to more exotic destinations.

“This increasing thirst for travel amongst the over 50’s, emphasises the need for high quality travel insurance,” says CEGA’s Chief Medical Officer Tim Hammond. “A good travel insurance policy should include access to high quality medical care – wherever a claimant is in the world – and repatriation back to the UK in an emergency.” Other signs of a good policy, according to Dr Hammond, include translation services and specific cover for adventurous sports such as paragliding, together with travel and overseas accommodation management for relatives at home, if the worst should happen.
