The fundraising was part of the annual Firefighter SkyTower Stair Challenge which saw fire squads from across the country race up the tower’s 1,103 steps in their full firefighting kit on 28 May.
The Auckland Airport rescue fire team played a leading role in setting up the Firefighter Stair Challenge as a charity fundraiser in 2005. Since then the Airport rescue fire teams have worked tirelessly each year to raise money for LBC by spending many evenings training on the escalators at the airport and raising funds from travellers and visitors who generously donate to the cause.
As well as this, Auckland Airport has been a key sponsor of the event since 2009. “We value the chance to showcase the professionalism of our highly trained firefighters,” says Anna Cassels-Brown, Auckland Airport’s General Manager People and Safety.
“This year we had 38 firefighters competing in the SkyTower challenge with great success. Collectively the Airport rescue fire teams raised an outstanding $64,468. The teams also placed well on the day, achieving top fundraising team, top team for the fastest three home (Willie Garrnett, Diego Canepa and Chris Bestwick) and a second placing in the women’s event for Jess Neho.”
“We’re very proud of our Auckland Airport rescue fire team and their efforts to raise funds and promote LBC’s great work,” says Anna.
