The local authorities informed that the avalanche occurred after a portion of central Italy was hit by magnitude 5.4 tremor and an aftershock of magnitude 4.7.
At the time of the avalanche, around 20 guests were staying at the Hotel Rigopiano, situated in the Pescara region of Italy. When a massive amount of snow hit the luxury hotel, it eventually trapped three of the guests.
The Governor of Pescara, Di Marco informed that a terrible tragedy happened and it seems that there might be some fatalities, which was yet to be confirmed. He also informed that the witnesses, who were locally in contact with the Alpine Rescue officials, reported that the hotel was occupied by about 20 guests and some employees.
As a snow storm also hit the region during the avalanche, all the telephone lines in the region were also dead, which made it tougher for the emergency officials to rescue the trapped travellers from the hotel. The officials from the National Mountain Rescue Corps informed that due to the treacherous weather condition, it could take them almost three hours to rescue the trapped victims as the road near the town was also covered in two metres of snow.
It was found that the Mountain Rescue was intervening with four teams from Abruzzo and the neighbouring region, in order to rescue the three people from the snowy grave.
