In total as many as ten Prima M4s would be manufactured at the site of Alstom in Belfort, France as part of a contract that was awarded by Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) in the year 2014.
These new locomotes would be operating under both 25kV AC, 50 Hz for the East-West corridor and also under 3kV for the corridor of North-South.
With about 3,000 km of track, the Azerbaijani railway network is an essential link between the Black and Caspian Seas and also between Russia and Iran. Bernard Peille who is the Managing Director for Western and Central Asia Cluster mentioned that they were happy to offer their first multi-purpose Prima locomotive to Azerbaijan and be a part of ambitious projects to raise the transit links between the Black and Caspian Seas and between Iran and Russia.
This technologically tailor-made product is the consequence of a solid relationship of trust between the project teams of ADY and Alstom.
The AZ4A passenger locomotive is based on the modular platform of Alstom Prima and is capable of running at approximately 160 km/hour in passenger service with longer runs in between repair and maintenance. Also, the AZ4A version of the Prima M4 was particularly designed for the technical requirements of Azerbaijan Railways and is in perfect compliance with the GOST (CIS) norms and specifications.
