Badgerys Firms As Secondary Sydney Airport Site – TTF

ttfBadgerys Creek is the most suitable location for a secondary Sydney airport and comments from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss naming Badgerys Creek as the frontrunner are welcome, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

Mr Truss has told the ABC’s 7.30 that the federal government is likely to announce a decision on the location of a secondary Sydney airport early in the New Year.

TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said this is good news for Australian tourism.

“We are very pleased to be nearing a decision on this critical issue and it is terrific to hear that Mr Truss will be making an announcement soon,” Mr Morrison said.

“I’m also pleased that the Opposition is backing the decision, with Shadow Minister Anthony Albanese also voicing his support.

“Numerous studies over many years have all reached the same conclusion: Badgerys Creek is the most appropriate site for a secondary Sydney airport.

“It’s important to note, however, that for a secondary airport to be most effective, it will need to be free from the constraints that prevent Sydney Airport from operating to its capacity.

“In the short-term, modernising operating restrictions at Sydney Airport will allow it to meet growing demand for flights in and out of Sydney, with passenger numbers forecast to double over the next twenty years.

“Sydney is Australia’s premier international gateway and a secondary airport will enable more international visitation, helping tourism fulfil its potential as an economic development strategy for Australia, providing job and business opportunities for people in Western Sydney and beyond.

“Tourism directly employs more than 530,000 Australians and generates more than $100 billion of expenditure every year and with the right policy frameworks in place, this will continue to grow putting Australia in a great position to fully capitalise on the opportunities of the Asian century.”
