The success of the inaugural Bank of Ireland Runway Night Run last year has been reflected in this year’s event being fully booked within just 36 hours of being opened for registration. A grand total of 1,700 places for the June 19th midnight event at Shannon Airport were up for grabs from Thursday last at midday but were entirely booked by late Friday night.
Shannon Airport has, as a result, closed off what is already an extensive waiting list for the event. It is now exploring further capacity options and will provide an update on Tuesday next, May 19th on the airport .
All proceeds from the event – registration fee is just €20, plus booking fee of €1.40– are going to Shannon Group plc’s chosen charities for 2015 – TLC4CF (Tipperary Limerick Clare for Cystic Fibrosis) and Milford Care Centre, Limerick.
On hand to launch this year’s event last week were GAA pundit and victorious Tipperary All-Ireland winning Manager Liam Sheedy, who is Area Manager, Mid-West Region for Bank of Ireland, and three-time Kerry All-Ireland medal winner Killian Young, Bank of Ireland, Tralee, Youth Co-Ordinator Kerry/West Cork.
Participants – no entries will be accepted on the night – will be asked to arrive at Shannon Airport for the event at least 90 minutes before the scheduled start-time to allow for registration and take part in the fun-warm up session delivered in the terminal building by ‘Mr Motivator’ Richie Clifford.
Said Shannon Group CEO Neil Pakey, “We’ve had a lot of firsts at Shannon over the years in an aviation and business sense but the Runway Night Run, on Ireland’s longest runway, was a hugely enjoyable first for us in a sporting sense last year. We had people travel from all over Ireland, with participants from Cork, Dublin, Mayo and right across the country and a small number also who came in from abroad.
“We were blown over by the response, which was all the more satisfying as this was our first time hosting the run and are not hugely surprised that the run was booked out so quickly.
“Ultimately we came up with this idea as a fundraiser for charity and it will raise much needed funds for very worthy organisations in this region. That wouldn’t be possible were it not for Bank of Ireland’s very generous support for the event and we are delighted to have them on board again as main sponsors this year. I would also like to thank the Shannon Group Staff Charity Committee for organising the event which is a major undertaking and they are already working hard to ensure that all participants have a great time on the night.”
Commenting Liam Sheedy, Area Manager for the Mid West with Bank of Ireland said “We are delighted to sponsor the Bank of Ireland Runway Night Run at Shannon Airport again this year. Last year’s event was a huge success with so many people taking part. This is a fantastic fun and unique event which will help raise awareness and much needed support for this year’s two chosen charities TLC4CF (Tipperary Limerick Clare for Cystic Fibrosis) and Milford Care Centre, Limerick.
“Shannon Airport is a much valued customer of Bank of Ireland and we are proud to support it with this important initiative which is helping to support two very worthy local charities. Bank of Ireland has a long history of working with the local communities in Limerick, Clare and Tipperary and I encourage everyone to get on abroad and take part in this great event I am certainly and looking forward to taking part and joining in on the fun myself. ”
