Authorities in Barcelona have said that they will fine vacation rental websites Airbnb and HomeAway 600,000 Euros ($633,000) each for offering accommodation that doesn’t have required permits. This is the latest move for putting a check on mass tourism in Barcelona. The Mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau told Catalunya Radio that although tourism is a positive side of this city, it has grown too much and creating problems for locals in housing.
The two companies have been found to be offering unlicensed accommodation in spite of having been fined smaller amounts earlier this year for the same fault. Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations of Europe located in northeastern Spain and Colau, former anti-eviction group activist, pledge to curb excessive tourism in the city getting complaints from its residents.
