The Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates released their latest report which showed that of this tourism spend, international visitors spent $608 million (up 7 per cent on the year to June 2016), and domestic tourists spent $1.2b (up 5 per cent) in that period.
MBIE manager of sector trends Mark Gordon said the tourism spending was also up on last month.
“When it comes to the monthly expenditure, tourism spends in Bay of Plenty for the month of June 2017 is up 9 per cent compared with the month of June 2016.”
In consultation with tourism industry representatives, MBIE developed the Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates.
It measures the expenditure of international and domestic visitors in regions in New Zealand. The data is based on administrative transaction data.
Mr. Gordon also said that tourism spend information for the regions helps inform investment and planning in the tourism industry by providing insight into where both domestic and international tourists are spending their money.
