The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will close the Bayonne Bridge between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., December 2 through December 4, to facilitate construction work as part of the agency’s Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance Program.
During the closure, the contractor will install posts between the new northbound and southbound lanes of traffic, allowing traffic to safely operate in both directions during the next phase of construction. This step is necessary to allow construction crews to begin to demolish the eastern half of the main bridge deck and approaches and construct the first half of the new approach road on the east side. During the overnight closures, all traffic will be diverted to the Goethals Bridge.
Also beginning December 2, construction crews will close the northbound JFK Boulevard on ramp in Bayonne and the southbound JFK Boulevard off ramp in Bayonne for the duration of the construction project. These ramp closures will facilitate necessary construction activities associated with the New Jersey approach structure.
All northbound traffic currently using the JFK Boulevard off-ramp will be diverted to the next exit to the north on NJ Route 440 at 5th Street. All southbound local traffic currently using JFK Boulevard to access the Bayonne Bridge will be diverted to the Avenue A on-ramp via JFK Boulevard, West 1st Street, and Avenue A.
