Shanghai practice MQ Studio has embraced Chinese tradition for the interiors of PuXuan Hotel and Spa, which offers guests a retreat from the bustle of Beijing at the city’s Guardian Arts Building.

The hotel sits atop the Ole Scheeren-designed culture hub, which opened last year close to the Forbidden City. The building’s glass facade references the brick patterns of traditional hutongs, and allows guests to gaze out over the imperial palace and Jingshan Park. Architecture enthusiasts can also appreciate views of Scheeren’s CCTV building from afar.

MQ Studio has crafted minimalist spaces for the hotel’s interiors that blend eastern and western influences. Sliding screens, wooden flooring and muted colours have been used across bedrooms, while public spaces have warm wood panelled walls, ribbed ceilings and polished stone floors.

Artwork comes courtesy of the Guardian Art Centre, which will be curating pieces of contemporary Chinese art for the PuXuan.

Guests at the 116-room hotel can enjoy French cuisine, or Cantonese classics with a twist, before retiring to the three-floor spa to recover from a long day spent in the city.
