Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, is considered the best city in the world to eat in, according to a New York-based travel magazine. And now international travelers have discovered its richness of food, which the locals have known for ages. In a survey conducted by Travel and Leisure, readers chose Beirut as the No. 1 destination for mouthwatering delicacies.
Beirut was the only Middle Eastern city to make it to the list of “The Best International Cities for Food” this year. Other cities finding their place in the magazine were France’s Paris and Bordeaux, Spain’s Barcelona and San Sebastian, Italy’s Rome, Bologna and Florence, Thailand’s Chiang Mai and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.
The magazine said that Lebanon’s capital city has not only caught attention of international tourists for its museums and other historic attractions, it is equally inviting for its quintessential Lebanese traditional cuisine. Most, if not all, socializing in Lebanon happens around dinner tables. Every Thursday, foodies, chefs, restaurateurs and farmers gather in Downtown’s Souk el Akel for tasting the latest signature dishes.
