Benidorm Beaches shut, Portuguese Man of War jellyfish stings people, chaos for holidaymakers

After a swarm of Portuguese Man o’ War jellyfish were spotted off the coast in the seaside resort of Benidorm, Spain a number of beaches remained closed this week.

The Costa Blanca, 92 km away, till the Orihueal Costa the creatures have  said to occurred.

It has been reported that the creatures had venomous tentacles growing up to 50 m in length. Its sting had the power to kill both fish and humans.Although the incident of killing humans were less.

Locals were warned to be careful because of the harmful jellyfish on the coastline and they should not be touched. The La Caleta beach has two of these creatures appearing. Their sting can be very dangerous and public should be very careful.

The beaches in the Pilar de Horadada area had erected red flags as well as flags with pictures of the animals. It warned visitors of the potential dangers of coming into contact with them which dwells near the surface of the ocean.

It has no means of propulsion but moves by currents, winds and tides. They were found in distant locations such as Nova Scotia in Canada and the Hebrides in Scotland.

The sting of the jelly fishes’ is extremely painful and it has been directed to treat it with salt water immediately. Fresh water causes the creatures’ nematocyst which is a venomous thread to discharge.
