Tourism Ireland’s drive to grow the number of golf visitors to the island of Ireland continues this week – at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, in south east England. A number of golf and tourism operators from Ireland have joined Tourism Ireland at this important event in the golfing calendar. One of the European Tour’s biggest golf competitions, the BMW PGA Championship attracts top players and thousands of spectators and international media each year – providing a fantastic platform to highlight our world-class golf. Golf holidays on the island of Ireland are a major focus for Tourism Ireland in Britain, and in other key markets around the world, and the organisation has a busy programme of promotions under way to grow the number of golf tourists in 2016 and beyond. David Boyce, Tourism Ireland’s Deputy Head of Great Britain, said: “Our presence at this year’s BMW PGA Championship is another excellent opportunity to showcase our world-class golf. This is just one element of Tourism Ireland’s busy promotional programme to encourage more golfers in Britain to consider a holiday in Ireland this year. Our promotions are reminding golfers about the fantastic courses where our champions – including Rory McIlroy, Pádraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Shane Lowry and Darren Clarke – honed and perfected their skills. Great Britain is the largest market for tourism to the island of Ireland and we have seen excellent growth in British visitor numbers so far again this year, with this week’s CSO figures for January to April showing growth of +19% in visitors from Britain.
