A roadside bomb exploded as the bus carrying Vietnamese tourists was passing by – close to the pyramids in Giza. Four people – three Vietnamese and one Egyptian tour guide are reported to have been killed.  About 10+ have been injured and they have been transferred to the nearby hospitals.

The bus had 16 people onboard and an IED exploded as the bus approached. As per the Reuters the device was hidden near a wall on Marioutiya Street on the Cairo outskirts. The locals and drivers were helping the injured to get out of the blasted bus. The bombing took place in the Giza region near Cairo, where the pyramids are located. The tourists were going to visit a sound and light show at the pyramids.

The Egyptian prime minister, Mostafa Madbouly, visited the injured at Al-Haram hospital. He added that the bus had chosen an alternate route. It would have been safe had they stuck to the scheduled route. However, the Egyptian driver denies having taken a different route.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez termed the attack an act of terrorism. He tweeted: “The bombing of the tourist bus in El-Maryoutiya, a despicable, cowardly terrorist act which targets what cannot be targeted: The determination of Egypt and the Egyptians.”

An urgent investigation ‘to arrest the perpetrators’ have been launched. No militant group has yet claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism contributed 375 billion Egyptian pounds and 11 per cent of GDP in 2017. However, these incidents are highly inimical to tourism in Egypt.
